I wrote an article earlier in the week and Dustin over at the old stomping grounds, Cartilage Free Captain, was nice enough to run it over there, too. A major criticism of my piece was “I was playing Football Manager”. That’s funny for three reasons: 1) I’ve never played the game 2) I know enough about the game to know how people completely gut rosters 3) I think it’s the only rational way to approach this offseason.
I tried to show my understanding of just how much business it is near the end of the article but I don’t think we can continue to operate with this much bloat for more than another transfer window. Sooner or later there is going to have to be a huge cutting of the cord so that, from that point forward, we can operate within the confines of normality.
And I’m not advocating buying storefront lottery tickets for our incomings. I want 250 million spent on five good, starting-quality-for-Tottenham Hotspur players.
Enough of me defending my acre of the internet, though. Who do you all think absolutely must be sold this summer and how many signings do you think are the bare minimum? Comments are open. Don’t all rush in at once : )
You wrote a very good initial piece, well thought out and explained. I’ve never played Football Manager either! I agree with basic premise (1) high turnover to cut out loans and surplus (2) Conte will leave, one way or another (3) we can spend 200-300m, call it 250 gross, net 50-100.
I feel Poch may be in the running but whoever it is we need a “Spurs Manager”, pressing, entertaining, not waiting for everybody to die of boredom. I hope Lloris stays on the roster and moves into coaching. We need a new, dominant keeper, 2 CBs, a truly creative mid, and a forward. I hate the “deadwood comments” that are so rude about loyal, hardworking Spurs players. But you listed most of the obvious sales. Ignore the naysayers on CFC.
I agree with much of what you wrote in the original piece. As for who to bring in - definitely another CB, for sure; that's where I'd start. The biggest question, for me, re: bringing in attacking players is who'll be coaching the team next season and what their approach is. It's one thing if it's Conte and Kane's still around; if Conte and Kane (and Son?) exit and a more youth/pressing-minded coach steps in, I'd love to see someone like Moussa Diaby brought in.
I'm operating at the assumption Conte is gone. I don't think selling Kane and Son at the same time is ideal. Hopefully, Kane feels like he wants more years in N17.
I agree with you on not wanting to lose both Kane and Son. And I'm inclined to agree with you about Conte - it feels like this year has been a physically and emotionally draining one for him for very understandable reasons, and I would not blame the guy for wanting to take a short break.

Yes, it's one thing to know the squad needs improving, quite another to say goodbye.
Sign no one. Promote from the youth team like a proper Tottenham team
Man do I have a story to tell you about 2018.
All roads lead to Madrid?
Next year's CL final is at Wembley so I hope all roads don't lead to Madrid
